COLLECTION: water guardians

I love the sea and the life within it, but I am also aware of it’s power and the ease with which it can cause serious problems for us, land dwellers.

New Zealand Maori have a cultural tradition concerning beings that live in deep pools in rivers, at confluences or whirlpools, in dark caves, or in the sea, especially in places with dangerous currents or deceptive breakers. These Taniwha hold a protective role over their tribe, though are perhaps a little capricious and need placating to ensure they continue to protect the tribe.
I have taken this idea and created my own Water Guardians.  If I were superstitious, I might hope that they protect the seas and perhaps me when I am playing in it. More likely, making these works and considering them allows me a chance to concentrate on my connection to the natural environment. I would like to pass this thought to you as you consider the works.
